MONOTYPE PRINTMAKING: WEEKEND WORKSHOP*

Monotype printing is a printmaking process where a unique image is created by painting or drawing on a smooth surface, like an acrylic plate, and then pressing it onto paper. Unlike other printmaking methods that yield multiple copies, monotype printing is spontaneous and produces only one-of-a-kind prints.

In this workshop, we will cover the basics of monotype printing, including various methods and techniques, working with color, using the printing press, and understanding the difference between water-based and oil-based inks. We’ll explore how to transfer drawings, paintings, and textures onto paper (both with and without a press) and you’ll also have the opportunity to experiment with paper cutouts, textured materials, and florals to create both positive and negative impressions.

This workshop is designed for all experience levels, where the focus is on creative exploration. Playfulness and experimentation are at the heart of the process, and everyone is encouraged to discover their own unique approach.

*The workshop will be taught in English.

Juna Wesley (*1996) is an artist and printmaker based in Zürich. She holds a BFA from the University of Porto, Portugal, and is pursuing a MFA at the Zürich University of the Arts. Since 2016, she has trained in various techniques including: monotype, relief, etching, and polyester lithography. Juna has held three solo exhibitions in Porto and participated in numerous group shows. In 2023, she received the Craft and Design Projects grant from the Danish Arts Foundation and completed a residency at Fyns Grafiske Værksted in Odense, Denmark. In 2024, she was awarded a fully funded printing residency at Kunstnarhuset Messen in Alvik, Norway.

“Since I began working as an artist, printmaking has played a central role in my practice. I am drawn to its rhythms of seriality and repetition, which allow me to explore an image through multiple layers and variations. I am fascinated with the balance between control and chance, a process where mistakes and experimentation often lead to unexpected and new results. In my work I look for the line between obscurity and clarity, a fluctuation between image construction and deconstruction. I am interested in the transformation of material, industrial structures, found images, and personal archives. To me, the printmaking process is a reminder of my own human limitations and gives me the freedom to interface with greater unknowns.”
